Madison

At a quarter to five, I hear someone drive up and park. After a while and no knock on the door, I walk outside, expecting to see Joe, but instead, I find a newer looking SUV parked in front of the garage but no one around. Mr. and Mrs. Nolan never park back here, and they already have a vehicle. I can’t picture them getting another one.

I’m about to walk back inside when Joe pulls down the driveway and parks next to the mystery SUV.

He gets off of his bike, looking at me cautiously, and I get a weird feeling as if he’s about to give me bad news. “Now, before you say anything, just let me explain. I made a few calls yesterday after we talked and got a great deal on this at an auction. If you don’t like it, we can—”

Then it all sinks in, and I know what he’s done. “Don’t like it? Of course, I like it, Joe. It’s a freaking SUV. What wouldn’t I like about it?”

“So you’ll use it, then?”

I cross my arms and walk around the vehicle looking it over. I’m in complete shock that he went out and bought a vehicle, just so I could borrow it. Who does something like that? Joe Mancini, that’s who. I hate the idea of relying on someone that has the potential to hurt me, or worse, use their kindness against me. What if I accept this extravagant gift and he wants something in return? If the last few weeks have shown me anything, it’s that Joe doesn’t want to use me. He’s done nothing but care for my every need, which is something no one has ever done before. Maybe letting him take care of me isn’t the worst thing in the world. The walls around my heart are crumbling with every sincere gesture and tempting look he gives me.

When I make it back around to where he’s standing, I shake my head at him, a smile pulling at the corner of my mouth. “It’s too much.”

“It’s an investment. If I bought a piece of shit car, it’d end up in my shop more often than not. I need you in something safe and reliable.”

This is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. I run up and hug Joe tight. “Thank you.”

“Look at me, Precious.”

I look up, resting my chin against his chest. “You’re not mad?” he asks.

I shake my head no.

“Do you want to take it for a drive, then?”

I smile big and go to the driver’s side and open the door. The keys are on the seat, dangling from a brand-new, sparkly blue heart keychain. He’s rough around the edges, but for me, he’s a prince.

I get in and buckle my seatbelt then put the key in the ignition and turn it on. I’m about to back out when Joe covers my hand. “Be careful.”

I roll my eyes and pull out of the driveway. I drive the backroads, getting comfortable in this vehicle.
